Downtown Milledgeville

Location: Hancock Street, Downtown Milledgeville

The Deep Roots mural pays tribute to one of Milledgeville’s most beloved annual events — the Deep Roots Festival. Founded in 2004 by Frank Pendergast, owner of The Brick and co-owner of Greene’s, the festival has grown into a lively celebration of music, art, and community. Originally created as a fundraiser for Milledgeville Main Street, proceeds from the festival have gone on to support downtown improvements like bike racks, planters, seasonal banners, and façade renovations. The mural captures the festival’s lasting impact and vibrant spirit, making it a must-see stop on your mural stroll through downtown.

 

Location: Hancock Street, Downtown Milledgeville

This iconic Coca-Cola mural in downtown Milledgeville is a true nod to local history and vintage charm. Painted in a classic 1940s style, the mural has remained nearly identical to its original form for over 20 years. It honors Milledgeville’s long-standing connection to the Coca-Cola brand, which began in 1913 when T.H. Clark founded the city’s Coca-Cola Bottling Company. After moving locations a few times, the company still operates just off Highway 22. Whether you’re a history buff or simply want a bold, nostalgic photo op, this bright red mural is a must-snap spot that celebrates Milledgeville’s sweet Southern roots.

 

Location: Bollywood Tacos, 107 West Hancock St.

The vibrant “Bollywood Fiesta” mural inside Bollywood Tacos was painted by Professor Valerie Aranda, a longtime art professor at Georgia College & State University. Completed in 2018, the mural bursts with color and energy, drawing inspiration from Indian, Latin, and Spanish cultures—perfectly reflecting the restaurant’s unique fusion of flavors. This eye-catching piece not only enhances the lively atmosphere of Bollywood Tacos but also celebrates the cultural blend that makes both the restaurant and Milledgeville so special.

Outside Morning Grind Café, you’ll find one of Downtown Milledgeville’s newest and most vibrant murals, painted in the summer of 2024. Funded by a grant from Visit Milledgeville, this colorful piece was brought to life by local artists Mattie Thompson and Landry Weaver, both students at Georgia College. The mural features an abstract map of Milledgeville, with nods to local landmarks like Lake Sinclair, the Greenway, the Governor’s Mansion, GCSU, GMC, and the railroad. Bright, blooming flowers are woven throughout the design, symbolizing the unique and diverse individuals who live, work, and grow in this small but dynamic town.

Location: Greene’s Farmhouse Foods, 116 W Hancock St.

The murals at Greene’s Farmhouse Foods reflect the heart and soul of this beloved family business. owned by brothers Doug and Frank Pendergast, Greene’s is known for serving up delicious Southern home-cooked meals in a warm, welcoming atmosphere, with a mission to get more veggies on more plates. The charming flower mural outside was painted by one of the owners’ daughters, while the artwork inside was a collaborative family effort—outlined and brought to life by the owners themselves. These murals, like the food, are made with love and rooted in tradition, adding warmth and a personal touch to every visit.

Strike a pose with the Peacock Wings mural — a colorful nod to Milledgeville’s most celebrated literary figure, Flannery O’Connor. Known for her Southern Gothic storytelling, O’Connor often used peacocks—two of which she famously kept at her Andalusia farm—as powerful symbols of pride and vanity in her work.
