Do you have a string of beads you inherited or bought but don’t wear anymore or an earring that’s long ago lost its mate? Or always wanted to make jewelry? In this class, you can turn those old treasures you can’t bear to part with into a new pair of earrings and bracelet or necklace or start from scratch and design and make a pair of earrings and bracelet or necklace. Either way, you’ll have new jewelry pieces that you’ll enjoy for many years to come!
Becky Sherrell has been making jewelry and glass beads since 2000 and never tires of the creative process. She’ll talk some about jewelry design and then get down to basics.
You’ll learn:
The difference between ear wires and head pins and gain confidence making a wrapped loop to make one pair of earrings.
Bead stringing for a necklace or bracelet and how to use crimp beads to attach a clasp.
How and when to use the basic jewelry-making tools: round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, flush cutter, and crimping tool.
Total Cost: $61 | Cost of Class: $45 + Supply Cost: $16
$16 Supply Cost is for sterling silver findings (2 earwires, 2 head pins, one clasp, and crimp beads)
Total Cost WITH TOOLS: $84 | Cost of Class: $45 + Supply Cost: $16 + Tools: $23
You can purchase the basic tools (round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, flush cutter, crimping tool and bead mat) for $23.00 when you register for the class or you can bring your own tools.
Supplies to be Provided:
We’ll use sterling silver findings (earwires, head pins, clasp, and crimp beads) for one pair of earrings and one necklace or bracelet for a total of $16.00.
Additional supplies can be purchased during class to make an additional pair of earrings ($4.00) or bracelet or necklace ($12.00 for either one).
Supplies for Students to bring:
Students will need to supply their own beads. They can bring beads from home if they are reconfiguring jewelry pieces or purchase beads or even some combination of the two. Hobby Lobby is a good source for beads for beginning jewelry makers. The students’ bead costs will depend on what they buy.
Hobby Lobby’s bead strands are 7” long, so if they want to make a necklace and pair of earrings, I recommend at least 3 strands for a 20” necklace and a pair of earrings. Students can get creative and pick 2 to 3 different bead strands. My design rule of thumb is the more beads the better. And if they want a longer necklace, more bead strands will be needed.
